Indonesian Student Assosiation in Japan
A. History of PPI Jepang
Indonesian Students Association in Japan-Japanese abbreviated PPI is an organization consisting of Indonesian students who are studying in Japan. This organization was founded in Tokyo on June 24, 1953 under the name "Indonesian Student Association in Japan" or in Japanese is called "Zainichi Indonesia Ryugakusei Kyokai".
B. Fact About PPI Jepang
According to the data from the Indonesian Embassy in Japan until May 1, 2008, there are 1,791 Indonesian students who currently studying in Japan, which the composition: 1101 students using private fund and the remaining, 690 students are Japanese government scholarship recipients.
From the data collected by PPIJ until July 2009, distribution of Indonesian students are grouped based on their regions are as follows:
Hokkaido: 4.41%
Tohoku: 4.99%
Kanto: 23.46%
Chubu: 8.32%
Hokuriku: 1.41%
Kansai: 20.38%
Chusi: 7.32%
Kyushu-Okinawa: 29.70%
The presence of Indonesian students in Japan is very necessary to study science and technology and the work ethics of the Japanese nation whom have limited natural resources but have been able to make the Japanese economy and technology at a respectable position among other nations in the world.
The presence of PPI as an organization is to coordinate and create a means of discussion between members so that knowledge obtained can be used optimally in the homeland. In addition, the Indonesian students in Japan directly or indirectly, are as an ambassador for the nation, the fostering of friendship and good relations between people of Japan and Indonesia. The activities of Indonesian students in Japan, whether consciously or not, have become a window for the Japanese people to know closer the culture of Indonesia.
In relationships between organizations and members, the principle of mutual benefit is an adhesive which is capable of creating a sense of belonging of the members with its organization, and could support the activities of organization. To achieve this, cooperation are required between the PPI with the Indonesian Government Agency or the Japanese primarily concerned with the main interests of members, so it can create an atmosphere where the existence of the organization's perceived benefit to members.
C. Activities
Some activities of PPI Jepang (ISA Japan) :
1. Annual Scientific Meeting (Conference) for Indonesian Students in Japan
In this conference, all Indonesian students in Japan including post doctoral fellows are invited to present their scientific research. This year, the 18th scientific meeting will be held in Nagoya in August.
2. International Sport Tournament
For maintaining good international relationships, representatives of all foreign student associations in Japan including Japanese students are invited to join our International Badminton Open Tournament. This year, the tournament will be held in Tokyo area.
3. Social Activities in Indonesia
PPI Jepang has three main social activities;
a. Rural Development Program,
b. Scholarship for elementary school and junior high school students, and
c. Book donation program.
4. Cultural Events
For promoting Indonesia in Japan, we coordinate cultural events such as traditional dances and games, musical performances and food bazaar all over Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Recently, Indonesian Day (SBI), which we arranged festival for Japanese and foreigners to experience indonesian culture and daily life, is held in Ehime. Japan local government officers and Indonesia Embassy representative joint this event.
5. Essay Competition
We also conduct essay competition in Indonesian language for PPI Jepang members and international community in Japan.
6. Study Tour
Visiting japan companies for direct learning and field experiences is one of our routine activities. Every member of PPI Jepang could participate this program.
7. International and National Seminars on Strategic Issues
PPI Jepang conducts some seminars during one year, not only for members but also for international communities. In 2010, PPI Jepang has conducted two national seminars and two international seminars.
We regularly hold discussion meeting with any Indonesian minister or representative who visits Japan for bilateral meeting. Recently, we cooperated with Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo in conducting panel discussion with Communication and Information Minister of Indonesia, Mr Tifatul Sembiring.

E. Structure of PPI Jepang
PPI Jepang consists of 8 area coordinator boards, which are called Korda.
These Boards are as follow:
· Hokkaido Board which covers: Sapporo and Hokkaido area;
· Tohoku Board which covers: Akita, Niigata, Aomori, Miyagi, Fukushima, Iwate and Yamagata;
· Kanto Board which covers: Tokyo, Gunma, Kanagawa, Ibaraki, Chiba, Yamanashi, Saitama and Tochigi;
· Hokuriku Board which covers: Fukui, Toyama, Ishikawa;
· Chubu Board which covers: Nagano, Shizuoka, Aichi, Gifu, Mie;
· Kansai Board which covers: Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Nara, Okayama, Kagawa, Tokushima, Wakayama, Shiga and Tottori;
· Chugoku-shikoku Board which covers: Hiroshima, Shimane, Yamaguchi, Ehime and Kochi;
· Kyushu-Okinawa Board which covers: Saga, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Oita, Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Okinawa and Fukuoka.
In performing its programs and events, PPI Jepang coordinates actively and cooperatively along with Indonesian Embassy and General Consulate as a advisory board of PPI Jepang.
